Alkerden forms the centerpiece to the wider development, providing brand-new community facilities as well as approximately 1,500 new homes.  Alkerden is defined by the market centre which will provide commercial, retail, community facilities, and an Education Campus.  There will also be a civic building with a job centre, police presence and health centre.  Ideas for the market square and supermarket, due to open in 2023, can be seen here.  Planning permission for the Alkerden Education Campus was granted in January 2021.  The Campus includes a nursery, primary school, secondary school with 2,200 places, dual-use sports centre, pitches, running track and tennis courts.  The state of the art sports facilities will be open to the community outside school hours.

Alkerden will sit immediately alongside a major new urban park, a brand-new extensive area of public space incorporating childrens play, public squares, sports facilities, walking and cycling routes.  An existing building, Alkerden Barn, is being retained, in-situ, sensitively restored and will be a key element of this new space, subject to planning approval.  Public consultation took place in December 2019.
